I developed and implemented the course “Analyzing Media Messages: Bias, Motivation and
Production Choices” for the educator professional development platform KQED Teach. This course provides educators with an engaging and interactive introduction to critical media analysis, a key media literacy skill.

The course aims to help participants:
- Learn how bias – both the media producers’ and their own – play a part in how media is made and interpreted
- Explore how different production choices impact how a piece of media is received and understood
- Do a media analysis of a topic that is relevant to them and their teaching
- Create a lesson plan that helps students practice critical media analysis that aligns with teaching objectives
Learning how to “read” the media is an increasingly important skill for everyone to develop, particularly with the growing influence of AI-generated media.
