Library Camp 2025: I love librarians!

My last responsibility with KQED Education was to co-lead a couple of workshops at “Library Camp,” a full day professional development day for Santa Clara based librarians from August 27-28. Our objective was the share our unique perspective on AI and student learning, based on our experience as a media producer and educational nonprofit focused on youth media making.

I love all stripes of educators, but librarians are one of my favorite groups to work with. They are often the de facto media literacy person at their schools, and typically excited to trying new things. And the educators in the South Bay are particularly fun to work with.

At Library Camp I co-led two sessions:

  • “AI Meets Student Voice workshop at Library Camp”
  • “Share or Beware in the Age of AI: Fact Check Like a Pro with KQED”

I also helped staff our resource table, which was popping for most of the day!

It was a bittersweet day, my last time working with my colleagues Rachel, Charlotte, and Jessica as a KQED representative. Not gonna lie, there were some emotional moments. Many librarians stopped by to lament the cuts in funding for public media, and ask us how we were doing. “I’m a supporting member, so I’m pretty upset,” several folks told us.

But for the most part it was a joy to get to share our work with such a great audience.

Thanks Santa Clara County Office of Education for having us out again. Special thanks to Rachel for all the support in organizing these workshops, to Charlotte for leading a killer session on AI and bias, and to Jessica for taking lovely stills of me presenting during our workshops.
